THOM KROM M TS 978 T-Shirt - Cold Dye Grey Viscose Modal Cotton Elastane Worked Knit Men's German

Regular price €124.84 EUR

Grey That Was Never Meant to Be Uniform.

The THOM KROM M TS 978 in cold dye grey is a three-fabric worked knit t-shirt where the fabric specification and the finishing process are equally considered. Shell 1 in 95% viscose, 5% elastane provides the primary panels with a natural lustre, silk-like drape, and breathability that cotton cannot offer at this weight. Shell 2 in 47% cotton, 47% modal, 6% elastane provides the secondary panels with the softness of modal, the natural feel of cotton, and a higher elastane concentration for movement. The rib is 100% cotton. Then cold dyeing is applied — a low-temperature process that penetrates the three fabrics at different rates, producing a grey with tonal variation that is unrepeatable. Every M TS 978 cold dye grey that leaves Turkey is a different piece. German design. Turkish manufacture.

Why This T-Shirt Is Different

  • Shell 1 — 95% Viscose, 5% Elastane: Viscose in the primary panels — a natural-origin fibre with a surface lustre and drape that cotton cannot achieve; cooler against the skin than cotton at the same weight, with a natural sheen that reads differently in different light; the 5% elastane provides stretch recovery without compromising the silk-like character of the viscose
  • Shell 2 — 47% Cotton, 47% Modal, 6% Elastane: A precisely balanced cotton-modal-elastane blend in the secondary panels — modal (beechwood-derived cellulose fibre) adds the softness and slight sheen of viscose with better shape retention; cotton provides natural breathability and familiar hand-feel; 6% elastane — the highest elastane concentration in any panel of any THOM KROM piece in this range — provides maximum recovery in the panels where the body's movement is most demanding
  • Rib — 100% Cotton: Pure cotton at the cuff and hem finishing — natural feel at every contact point; the pure cotton also receives the cold dye at a rate distinct from the viscose and modal shells, contributing to the tonal variation at the finished edges
  • Cold dye grey finish: Applied at low temperature after construction — the cold process allows the dye to penetrate the three fabrics unevenly, producing a grey with visible mottling, tonal variation between panels, and a surface character that changes across the garment
  • Each piece is unique: Cold dyeing at low temperature cannot be precisely controlled; the distribution of grey across the viscose shell, the cotton-modal shell, and the cotton rib produces a different result for every garment
  • Worked / gewirkt construction: Loop-built fabric throughout — the cold dye interacts with the knit loop structure, fading the loop crowns more than the loop valleys and adding microscopic tonal depth to the grey beyond what flat-fabric dyeing achieves
  • German design: THOM KROM precision in material specification combined with a finishing process that introduces irreducible natural variation
  • Unlike the M TS 1001 which achieves performance through a high-polyester single blend, the M TS 978 achieves a different performance entirely — the performance of feel, of drape, of surface character — through three natural-dominant fabrics and a finish that cannot be standardised

The Moment You Put It On

The viscose shell makes contact first — immediately cooler and smoother than cotton, with a slight surface sheen that shifts as you move. The modal in the secondary panels adds a different softness: denser, less slippery than viscose, with a matte warmth that reads as a subtle tonal contrast against the viscose's lustre. The cold dye grey moves across both shells and the cotton rib at its own pace, producing a grey that is never quite the same colour in two places. You are wearing a piece that does not exist in exactly this form anywhere else.

This is the THOM KROM t-shirt for the days when the fabric is the statement.

The Art of Cold Dyeing Across Three Fabrics

Cold dyeing — the application of dye at low temperatures — is used in the M TS 978 grey because low-temperature processing cannot fully standardise the dye uptake across different fibre types. Viscose, being a regenerated cellulose fibre, accepts dye rapidly and deeply; cotton, a natural cellulose, accepts it more slowly; modal, a refined cellulose fibre, sits between the two in uptake rate. The 5% and 6% elastane content in the two shells adds a synthetic component that resists the dye almost entirely. The result is a grey in which the viscose shell reads darkest, the cotton rib reads at an intermediate tone, the modal-cotton shell sits between the two, and the elastane threads within each fabric read as the lightest registers in the knit loop structure. The interaction is not designed; it is engineered to be uncontrolled within parameters. THOM KROM specifies the fabrics, the dye chemistry, and the temperature range, then allows the material physics to determine the outcome. This is the sustainability angle as well: cold dyeing uses significantly less thermal energy and sets dye with less water and chemical fixative than conventional hot dyeing, while producing a surface character that hot dyeing cannot replicate.

How to Wear It

  • As a standalone piece in warm weather: The viscose shell manages temperature actively — cooler against the skin than cotton, with a natural lustre that makes the M TS 978 a complete warm-weather statement without layering
  • With the M ST 537 dark used grey trousers: Two grey finishing treatments in conversation — the cold dye t-shirt's tonal mottling above, the used grey trouser's directional fade below; different finish processes, the same grey register
  • Under the M SJ 706 grey stone wash spray jacket: Three grey finishing processes in one look — cold dye, used wash, and stone wash spray — each producing a different surface character at the same colour temperature
  • As a base layer in transitional seasons: The viscose breathes actively and the elastane panels accommodate layering; the cold dye grey reads through semi-sheer outer layers without losing its surface character

Care Instructions

  • Hand wash cold or machine wash cold, delicate cycle — cold water is essential to preserve the cold dye finish; warm or hot water will accelerate fading and alter the tonal relationships between the three fabrics
  • Wash inside out to protect the viscose surface sheen and prevent pilling at the loop crowns
  • Do not tumble dry — lay flat to dry; viscose loses significant tensile strength when wet and will distort if hung or machine-dried
  • Do not bleach — bleach will destroy the cold dye finish and produce uncontrolled, uneven fading across the three fabrics
  • Do not iron directly — low steam from inside with a cloth barrier if needed; viscose is particularly heat-sensitive
  • Do not dry clean
  • Store folded; viscose is susceptible to prolonged pressure marks but recovers with light steaming
