W5409 Balloon Trouser — 100% Viscose Satin Cold-Dyed Mud Gathered Women's Italian
Satin That Has Been Through the Cold.
The W5409 is built on 100% viscose satin — a fabric with the liquid drape and surface sheen of silk satin and the accessibility of a premium synthetic. Cold-dyed in mud (fango), the satin absorbs the low-temperature dye in a way that produces organic tonal variation across the surface: the mud is not a flat colour but a living one, shifting between warm ochre and cool grey depending on the light. Gathering at both the front and back creates the balloon volume without structure — the fabric is gathered at the waist and released, the satin falling in soft, luminous folds. This is a trouser that moves like water and catches light like a mirror.
Why This Trouser Is Different
- 100% Viscose Satin: Pure viscose woven in a satin construction — the satin weave floats the warp threads over multiple weft threads, creating a smooth, lustrous surface on one side and a matte surface on the other. The result is a fabric with the visual weight of silk satin at a fraction of the cost and with better drape.
- Cold-Dyed Mud (Fango): The warm, earthy mud tone is achieved through low-temperature dyeing, producing organic tonal variation across the satin surface. The sheen of the satin amplifies the cold-dye effect: the colour shifts more dramatically in different light conditions than it would on a matte fabric.
- Gathering Front & Back: The balloon volume is created through gathering at both the front and back of the waistband — the satin is gathered into the waist and released, falling in soft, fluid folds that catch light differently at every angle. This is a different construction from split seams or pleats: the gathering creates a more organic, fluid volume.
- Elasticated Waist with Drawstring: The gathered waistband is elasticated for comfort and adjustable via an internal drawstring — the gathering is maintained by the elastic, the drawstring allows further adjustment.
- Luminous Surface: The satin weave creates a surface that catches and reflects light — in the mud colorway, the sheen shifts between warm gold and cool silver depending on the angle, the cold-dye tonal variation adding depth to the reflection.
- Balloon Silhouette: Full volume through the seat and thigh, created by the gathering — the satin falls in soft folds that move with the body, the balloon shape more fluid and organic than a structured construction.
- Functional Pockets: Integrated without disrupting the gathered balloon line.
- Made in Italy: Constructed in Italian ateliers with the satin handling expertise and cold-dyeing precision that 100% viscose satin demands.

The Moment You Put Them On
The W5409 is immediately different in the hand — the viscose satin is cool and smooth, with a weight and slip that announces itself before you put it on. On the body, the gathering at the waist releases into soft, luminous folds that move ahead of the body rather than with it. The mud colorway shifts as you move: in shadow, it reads as a deep, warm earth tone; in direct light, the satin sheen brings out the cooler, more complex tones of the cold dye. This is a trouser that changes with the room.
The elasticated waist sits comfortably without rolling — the gathering is maintained by the elastic, the drawstring allows you to adjust the fit precisely. From the outside, the trouser reads as fluid and considered. The gathering at the front and back creates a volume that is organic rather than architectural — soft folds rather than sharp seams, movement rather than structure.
The Art of Viscose Satin
Satin is a weave construction, not a fibre — it can be made from silk, polyester, nylon, or, as in the W5409, viscose. The satin weave floats the warp threads over four or more weft threads before interlacing, creating a smooth, continuous surface on one side with minimal interlacing points. This produces the characteristic lustre of satin: the smooth surface reflects light in a single direction, creating a sheen that shifts as the fabric moves. In viscose, the satin weave is particularly effective: viscose fibres are smooth and round at the microscopic level, which amplifies the reflective quality of the satin surface. The result is a fabric that reads as silk satin in photographs and in person, with a drape that is even more fluid than silk due to viscose’s lower surface tension. Cold-dyed in mud, the viscose satin absorbs the low-temperature dye unevenly — the colour settles differently across the warp and weft threads, creating a tonal variation that the satin sheen amplifies into a shifting, complex surface. LA HAINE INSIDE US chose 100% viscose satin for the W5409 because no other fabric combination achieves this particular quality of drape, sheen, and cold-dye response.
How to Wear It
- Satin Monochrome: Pair with a matte mud or camel top — the satin sheen of the W5409 provides all the surface interest needed, the matte upper creating a material contrast that makes the satin read as more luxurious.
- Tonal Earth: Wear with a cold-dyed cotton or linen top in the same mud or sand family — a monochrome look where the satin sheen and gathered volume provide the visual complexity.
- Contrast Texture: Style with a chunky knit or textured wool top — the smooth, luminous satin against a rough, matte surface creates a compelling material tension that reads as intentional and editorial.
- Evening Ease: With a simple silk or satin top in black or deep navy — the mud satin trouser reads as evening-appropriate without effort, the gathered volume and cold-dye sheen doing the work.
Care Instructions
- Hand wash cold (30°C) or dry clean — viscose satin is delicate and best handled with care
- Do not tumble dry — lay flat or hang to preserve the satin surface and gathered drape
- Cool iron on the reverse side if needed — do not iron directly on the satin surface
- Do not bleach
- Wash inside out and separately to prevent snags on the satin surface
