Two Cotton Fabrics. One Cold Dye. An Unrepeatable Grey.

The THOM KROM M TS 985 in cold dye grey is a dual-shell worked knit t-shirt that sits between the M TS 960 and the M TS 978 in construction complexity. Shell 1 in 95% cotton, 5% elastane — the pure cotton-elastane base of the M TS 960 range. Shell 2 in 47% cotton, 47% modal, 6% elastane — the cotton-modal-elastane blend that defines the M TS 978's secondary panels. No viscose. Two cotton-dominant fabrics, both natural-fibre-led, both receiving the cold dye process at different rates and producing different grey registers. The result is a t-shirt where the panel structure is revealed through colour as much as through construction. German design. Turkish manufacture.

Why This T-Shirt Is Different

  • Shell 1 — 95% Cotton, 5% Elastane: The primary panels in the purest cotton-elastane worked knit in the THOM KROM range — maximum natural breathability, softness, and full-garment stretch recovery; the 5% elastane provides consistent movement without altering the cotton character
  • Shell 2 — 47% Cotton, 47% Modal, 6% Elastane: The secondary panels in an equal-weight cotton-modal blend with 6% elastane — the highest elastane concentration of any THOM KROM panel, providing maximum movement recovery at the high-flex zones; modal adds a softer, denser hand-feel and a slight surface sheen that differentiates these panels from the cotton-dominant Shell 1
  • Cold dye on two fabrics simultaneously: Shell 1's 95% cotton accepts the cold dye more readily than Shell 2's 47% cotton, 47% modal, 6% elastane blend — the modal component accepts the dye at a different rate from cotton, and the higher elastane concentration in Shell 2 resists the dye more than Shell 1's 5% content; the result is a grey that is measurably different between the two shells, making the panel structure of the t-shirt visible through colour
  • Each piece is unique: Cold dyeing at low temperature cannot be standardised; the tonal difference between Shell 1 and Shell 2, and the variation within each shell, produces a cold dye grey that is specific to every garment
  • Dual-shell worked knit t-shirt: Panel differentiation in a t-shirt is unusual — the M TS 985 applies the dual-shell construction logic of the THOM KROM jacket and trouser range to the t-shirt category, where it is far less common
  • Worked / gewirkt construction: Loop-built fabric at every panel — the cold dye interacts with the knit loop structure as well as the fabric composition, adding the loop-crown-vs-loop-valley tonal depth to the already complex cold dye result
  • German design: THOM KROM construction intelligence applied simultaneously to fabric specification, panel placement, and finishing process
  • Unlike the M TS 960 cold dye grey (single fabric, uniform within-fabric cold dye variation) and the M TS 978 cold dye grey (three fabrics including viscose, panel-to-panel and surface character variation), the M TS 985 cold dye grey produces a grey that varies between panels in a way visible to the eye but defined by cotton and modal, not viscose

The Moment You Put It On

The two shells make contact at different points on the body — and they feel different. Shell 1's pure cotton-elastane is familiar: breathable, soft, direct. Shell 2's modal content adds a denser softness at the secondary panels, a slightly different weight and surface character. The cold dye grey reveals the structure: the two shells carry the grey at different depths, and the tonal difference between them traces the panel geometry of the t-shirt across the body. You are wearing a garment where the construction is part of the colour.

This is the THOM KROM t-shirt for those who have understood the dual-shell logic and want it at the base layer.

The Art of Cold Dye Across Two Cotton-Dominant Fabrics

The cold dye process on the M TS 985 interacts with two distinct fabric compositions that share a cotton majority but differ in their secondary fibre content. Shell 1 is 95% cotton, 5% elastane: the cotton accepts cold-process reactive dye readily and the elastane resists it; within the shell, the tonal variation is between cotton threads (darker) and elastane threads (lighter). Shell 2 is 47% cotton, 47% modal, 6% elastane: the cotton and modal both accept the dye, but at different rates — modal, as a more refined and processed cellulose fibre, has a smoother surface and slightly different dye affinity from cotton; the 6% elastane in Shell 2 resists more completely than the 5% in Shell 1, adding proportionally more dye-resistant thread to the shell's visual field. The result is a Shell 2 that reads as a measurably different grey from Shell 1 — not dramatically, but visibly — under the same cold dye chemistry. The panel structure of the t-shirt, usually invisible in solid-colour garments, becomes a tonal element. This is the construction intelligence of the THOM KROM dual-shell approach applied to a finishing process rather than to performance properties. As with all cold-dye pieces in the range, the low-temperature process uses significantly less thermal energy than conventional hot dyeing and produces a surface character that hot dyeing cannot replicate.

How to Wear It

  • As a standalone piece: The cold dye grey reads as a complete surface statement — the tonal panel variation visible in the right light, the two-fabric construction present in the hand-feel across the body
  • With the M ST 537 dark used grey trousers: Cold dye above, used finish below — two grey processes in conversation, the t-shirt's mottled panel grey against the trouser's directional fade
  • Layered under the M SJ 706 grey stone wash spray jacket: The cold dye cotton-modal t-shirt under the stone wash spray outer — three grey surface treatments in a single look, each produced by a different process
  • As a considered base layer: The dual-shell construction compresses cleanly under any THOM KROM outer layer; the tonal panel variation disappears under a jacket and reveals itself when the jacket comes off

Care Instructions

  • Hand wash cold or machine wash cold, delicate cycle — cold water is essential to preserve the cold dye finish; warm or hot water will alter the tonal relationships between Shell 1 and Shell 2 unevenly, as the two fabrics respond differently to thermal processing
  • Wash inside out to protect both shell surfaces and the cold dye finish
  • Do not tumble dry — lay flat to dry; high heat degrades the cold dye finish and the elastane recovery in both shells
  • Do not bleach — bleach destroys the cold dye finish and will produce uneven fading across the two shells at different rates
  • Low steam iron if needed — press from inside with a cloth barrier; avoid direct high heat on either elastane-blend shell
  • Do not dry clean
  • Store folded to maintain the worked knit structure over time
