THOM KROM W SJ 49426 Woman Jacket - Grey Used Finish 71% Cotton Shell Modal Lining Italian FW25/26

Regular price €259.00 EUR

Used Grey Cotton. Modal Lined. German Design.

The THOM KROM W SJ 49426 is a women's jacket in grey with a used finish. Shell: 71% cotton / 24% polyester / 5% elastane. Lining: 48% cotton / 48% modal / 4% elastane. The used finish is a garment-washing process applied to the cotton-dominant shell after construction: the cotton fibres abrade and soften at the surface under the wash process, and the grey dye fades unevenly to produce tonal variation within the grey — no two garments emerge from the used wash process with identical surface character; the grey reads as a worn, lived-in neutral rather than a flat industrial grey. Inside, the 48/48 cotton-modal lining is the skin-contact layer: modal (derived from beech wood cellulose) provides a measurably softer hand feel than cotton or polyester linings and absorbs moisture at the torso surface. Women's, XS–M. Made in Italy. Fall/Winter 25/26.

Why This Jacket Is Different

  • Used finish on grey cotton — what it is and what it produces: A used finish (also: enzyme wash, garment wash, stone wash, or combined process) is applied to the completed jacket after construction; the cotton-dominant shell fibres are abraded and softened at the surface under controlled washing conditions, and the grey dye is selectively faded at stress points and surface-contact zones (pocket edges, collar, cuffs, shoulders, seam lines) while the fabric recesses and folds retain more dye; the result is a grey that is not a single flat colour but a tonal range within grey — lighter at the surface contact points, slightly darker in the recesses; this is the same principle as cold-dyeing (where the dye does not penetrate the fibre fully) but achieved through post-construction washing rather than dyeing technique; in grey, the used finish's tonal variation is more visible than in black (where raised and recessed tonal differences are narrower) — the W SJ 49426's grey reads as dimensionally active, with surface variation that reads as character rather than wear damage; each jacket exits the wash process with a slightly different distribution of lighter and darker grey zones within the garment, making the used finish a technique that produces individual rather than uniform results
  • 48% cotton / 48% modal lining — why modal at 48%: Modal is a cellulose fibre derived from beech wood pulp and produced through the Lenzing Modal process (or equivalent); the beech wood cellulose is dissolved and re-extruded as a fine, smooth continuous filament; the resulting fibre is measurably softer than cotton (modal fibres have a smoother surface profile than cotton's naturally crimped fibres), has higher moisture absorption than cotton (modal can absorb approximately 50% more moisture than cotton by weight), and is significantly softer and more temperature-stable than polyester; as a lining at 48% modal / 48% cotton / 4% elastane, the W SJ 49426's inner surface is a co-dominant blend of the two cellulose fibres: the modal contributes its smooth, soft surface character and high moisture absorption; the cotton contributes structural durability and dimensional stability that pure modal linings lack (modal fibres, like viscose, have lower wet strength than cotton and can distort under washing without polyester or cotton stabilisation); the 4% elastane allows the lining to move with the jacket shell and with the wearer's body without pulling or bunching at the underarm and back; the lining is premium — modal linings cost more to produce than polyester linings and are found in higher-priced garments where skin-contact comfort is a specified design priority
  • Shell 71/24/5 cotton-polyester-elastane as jacket material: The same shell composition as the THOM KROM W SK 9526 skirt and W ST 41826 trousers in the FW25/26 women's range, here applied as jacket shell; in jacket form, the 71% cotton provides the outer surface character (matte in its unfinished state, but the used wash process softens and textures the surface, producing a fabric that is simultaneously cotton-matte and used-finish-dimensional); the 24% polyester stabilises the cotton shell through the jacket's extended wear and repeated used-wash-compatible care cycles; the 5% elastane at the jacket's stress points (back, underarm, sleeve connection) allows body movement without the jacket pulling across the back or shoulders
  • W SJ — shirt jacket construction: The W SJ 49426 is a shirt-weight jacket construction — lighter and less structured than the brand's padded W B 326 and W J 21326 jackets; the cotton-blend shell without insulation fill produces a jacket that provides structure and coverage without thermal insulation; the modal lining replaces the thermal layer of a padded jacket with a comfort layer; the W SJ 49426 is appropriate as a transitional jacket (mild autumn conditions, indoor-outdoor environments) or as a layering piece over the FW25/26 cotton-blend tops and under heavier outerwear
  • Grey in the THOM KROM FW25/26 women's range: The W SJ 49426 in grey is the only non-black piece in the FW25/26 women's range at TEPHRA; the used grey finish creates a neutral that complements the range's black pieces without requiring a black-on-black monochrome; grey used-finish cotton above black cotton-blend trousers or skirt is a tonal relationship within a neutral palette, with surface texture contrast (used-finish dimensional grey vs matte structured black) as the design element
  • Made in Italy: THOM KROM German design, Italian production; FW25/26
  • Unlike standard grey jackets (where the grey is a flat, uniform fabric colour applied uniformly across the surface), the W SJ 49426's used finish produces a grey with inherent tonal depth — the wash process creates the variation that standard dyeing cannot; unlike synthetic jackets with polyester linings (which are smooth against the skin but do not absorb moisture and retain body heat), the modal lining absorbs moisture and breathes at the skin-contact surface

The Moment You Put It On

The modal lining is the first contact: a cellulose surface that is smoother and softer than cotton, warmer than polyester, absorbing rather than repelling the body's initial heat output. The jacket settles on the shoulders without pulling — the 5% elastane in the shell accommodating the shoulder drop and arm position without the jacket back riding up. Outside, the grey used-finish cotton surface reads differently in different light: in flat indoor light, a softened matte grey with subtle surface variation; in directional outdoor light, the tonal differential between lighter surface-contact zones and slightly darker recesses becomes more visible, the used finish's character most apparent where the light rakes across the fabric surface at a low angle — collar, shoulders, cuffs reading fractionally lighter against the jacket body's slightly deeper grey. This is grey as a material process rather than a colour choice: the used finish makes the grey dimensional in a way that flat-dyed grey is not.

The Art of the Used Finish on Cotton

Cotton is the textile fibre most responsive to used-finish washing processes: cotton fibres have a natural surface crimp and cellulose structure that abraded and softened by controlled washing, enzyme treatment, or stone contact in a way that synthetic fibres do not replicate. On grey cotton, the used-finish process produces tonal variation because the grey dye — applied to the yarn or fabric before construction — is not distributed uniformly in depth through the cotton fibre; at the fibre's outer surface, the dye is most concentrated; as the used-wash abrades the fibre surface, it removes some of the most superficial dye, revealing the cotton fibre's natural lighter colour beneath; at stress points and surface-contact zones (where abrasion is highest under the wash), this surface dye removal is most advanced, producing the lightest grey tones; in the fabric's recesses and fold-protected zones, the surface is less abraded and retains more dye, producing the slightly deeper grey tones. The 24% polyester fibres in the W SJ 49426's shell do not respond to the used-wash abrasion in the same way as cotton — polyester fibres are smoother-surfaced and more abrasion-resistant; this means the used finish's tonal variation is produced primarily by the 71% cotton component, with the polyester fibres maintaining the fabric's structural integrity through the wash process that produces the surface effect. THOM KROM applies the used finish to grey (rather than black or a saturated colour) because grey's inherent lightness makes the tonal differential most visible: in black, the used-wash would produce a faded grey-black at abrasion points; in a saturated colour, it would produce a colour shift; in grey, it produces a deepening and lightening within the grey range that reads as the used finish's intended dimensional character. German design decision. Italian production. Wash process that cannot be identically replicated twice.

How to Wear It

  • Used grey over black cotton-blend — tonal neutral layering: The W SJ 49426 used grey jacket over the W TS 57326 black cotton-blend top and W ST 41826 black cotton-blend trousers — grey used-finish cotton above a black cotton foundation; the used finish's dimensional grey above the black pieces' flat matte black; neutral palette with surface texture contrast as the design element; all three garments in the same material family (cotton-dominant blend) with different colours and finishes
  • As a transitional outer layer: The cotton shell without insulation fill makes the W SJ 49426 appropriate in mild autumn conditions (10–18°C) as the primary outer layer; above this temperature range it works as a structured overshirt; below it, it layers under the W B 326 or W J 21326 padded jackets; the modal lining's moisture absorption and the cotton shell's breathability make the jacket comfortable across a wider temperature range than a synthetic-shell jacket at the same weight
  • The grey neutral in the THOM KROM FW25/26 women's range: As the only grey piece in the range at TEPHRA, the W SJ 49426 serves as the colour break in a full-range look; grey used-finish jacket above the viscose black skirts (W SK 9326) or the cotton-blend trousers (W ST 41826); the used-finish grey's tonal depth reads against the viscose skirt's directional sheen in black as a deliberate surface contrast within neutral colours
  • Standalone — used grey as a design statement: The W SJ 49426 worn as the primary design element — the used-finish grey jacket as the piece that defines the look above simple black or white pieces; the used finish's non-uniform surface character reads as a design decision at close range and as a clean grey silhouette from a distance; effective as both an urban and a resort piece within the THOM KROM German design vocabulary

Care Instructions

  • Machine wash cold on gentle cycle — the used finish has already been set by the garment-wash process; cold washing maintains the current surface character without advancing the fading; hot washing will continue to abrade and fade the cotton-dye surface, advancing the used effect beyond its designed state; wash inside out to minimise surface abrasion during the machine wash cycle
  • Hang to dry — the modal lining and cotton shell both respond better to air drying than tumble drying; tumble dryer heat at high settings will cause the modal fibres to shrink unevenly and degrade the lining's soft hand feel; at low heat, tumble drying is possible but not recommended for preserving the lining quality through multiple seasons
  • Iron on low-medium heat through a pressing cloth — the used-finish surface has a texture that direct high-heat ironing can flatten permanently; use a pressing cloth and low-medium heat to remove wrinkles without compressing the used-finish surface character; the modal lining can be pressed on low heat from the inside
  • Do not bleach — bleach will damage the elastane in both shell and lining and cause permanent colour damage to the used grey dye
  • Store hanging — the jacket's structured shell maintains its shape best on a hanger; avoid compression in folded storage which will crease the cotton shell at the fold lines
